Community Solar Powered Water Station

Niger is a landlocked country of 21.5 million people where nearly three in five live in poverty, and the nation ranks last — 188th of 188 — on the Human Development Index. Clean water is scarce, and the Tillabéri region suffers chronic shortages, especially when temperatures climb above 40°C.

Solar water stations are cost-effective and sustainable, bringing clean water to remote villages where traditional hand pumps fail and diesel pumps are not viable. Last year, we constructed 35 solar-powered water stations serving around 45,000 people daily.

A community solar powered water station is our largest solution, serving whole communities with clean water for drinking, the home, and for crops and livestock.

Muntada Aid is building a community Solar Powered Water Station for the cluster of villages around Tanka. The water project will provide clean drinking water to at least 6,000 people daily.

Daughter of the Desert – Barakatu

This is the story of Barakatu and how access to clean water is changing her life in the quiet corner of the Sahara.

Barakatu is 18 and lives with her parents in the village of Tanka in Niger. Due to the family's socio-economic situation, Barakatu had to leave education after finishing her primary school.
