Missed or broken fasts

What are Fidyah and Kaffarah?

The blessed Ramadan is the most loved and cherished month in the Islamic calendar. Fasting from dawn to dusk is one of the most treasured acts during Ramadan, but sometimes life happens. However, there are ways you can still show your love for Ramadan. Those who can't fast for legitimate reasons and cannot make up afterwards must pay Fidyah. For any fasts missed unnecessarily, one has to pay Kaffarah.

Fidyah

Fidyah is paid when someone cannot fast for a valid, ongoing reason — such as chronic illness, pregnancy or old age. For each missed fast, £7 provides meals for a person in need.

Kaffarah

Kaffarah is due when a fast is deliberately broken without a valid reason. The expiation is to fast 60 consecutive days or, for those unable to, to feed 60 people in need — which we provide for £300 per broken fast.
